10 TIPS AND TRICKS TO MAKE YOUR GARDEN STAND OUT THIS SPRING!

Whether you have a small patio or a sprawling garden, these tips will help you achieve a luxurious outdoor area just in time for spring!
CLEAR OUT!
Before we start planning our gardens, let's figure out what we have, what we need and what is ready for the bin! Give your furniture a good clean and jet wash a patio if you have one, you will be surprised by the amount of dirt that gathers during the winter months. Keep an eye out for fences and decking that could do with a lick of paint, and any garden ornaments that look particularly weathered.
Top Tip! Dead plants, twigs and grass can all be put into a compost bin

IDENTIFYING
Identifying areas is key, what works for someone else's garden may not be suitable for yours. Study your garden, where does the sun stay the most? What're the most private areas? What do you use your garden for? For example, if you have a greenhouse place this in a sunny area. Sometimes it’s hard to visualise your space so grab a pen and paper and draw some plans! Sketch, sketch, sketch! Don’t settle with the first plan even if you feel you have made your mind up, continue to sketch and more creative ideas will follow!
MOOD BOARD
So, you’ve identified your areas, now it’s time to choose a style, the fun part! Whether it’s the relaxing vibes that come with a Japanese outdoor space or the romantic inspiration from a French garden, take your time in selecting the most suitable for you. Pinterest is the perfect place to find a vast range of images, creating mood boards will help you visualise your space
UPCYCLING
Improving your garden sometimes comes at a high price especially when it involves labour costs. This is where upcycling can save you a fortune! Patio stencils are available online or better still you can make one! All you need is thick card/plastic the size of your patio slabs, a scalpel, masonry paint and a roller. Draw your chosen pattern onto the card/plastic, use a scalpel to cut out the pattern creating a stencil, then secure the template on to a patio slab. Roll the paint over the stencil and repeat! GREENARY
Choosing the right greenery can be confusing, always take into consideration height/width and recommended positioning. Make sure tall plants are placed at the back, you can even create privacy with these as well! Think about sectioning areas with plants, maybe a climbing rose travelling over an arch dividing two spaces… sounds beautiful right! If you prefer less maintenance when it comes to your garden why not opt for artificial plants. An expanding trellis is a great way to hide an ugly area or even to create a screen for privacy!
FURNITURE
Always shop around when it comes to garden furniture or better still buy at the end of summer and you’ll find some great deals! Always store garden furniture inside or place a waterproof cover over the top for protection. Read tip 10 for ways to improve the look of your furniture

OUTDOOR RUGS
So, you’ve identified where your seating area is going, it’s now time to bring this space together, think of it as your living room. You have your furniture, which may be rattan sofas, deck chairs or a bistro set, adding items like an outdoor rug will start to create a cosy and comfortable space. Think about colour and pattern, this can be carried throughout the rest of the design.
LIGHTING
When the sun starts to set there is nothing better than the look of twinkling lights throughout your garden! There are many styles of solar lights out there, this is where your mood board will help you… you already picked the vibe you are aiming to achieve so make sure there is a strong link with the lights you buy.
Top Tip: If you have candles or lanterns from your home that you have outgrown or may not suit your decor any more try to adapt these in your garden!
FEATURE AREA
Creating a centrepiece will really finish off your garden. You need to choose whether this is a fire pit, water feature or even a pergola… whatever you choose be sure to shop around, garden centres are always more expensive than shops like B&M, The Range and Argos. Always check measurements before purchasing.
ACCESSORIES
It is easy to fall down the hole of buying everything you like… this will cause clutter and result in a mishmash outcome. Revert back to your mood board to stay on track with your chosen style. Colour, patterns and textures are all created here, it’s your final step to bring the space together.
Top tip! If you have a sewing machine, why not upcycle some cushions, look online for waterproof material and create your own covers!
